Course Overview

CHIKV was only identified in a handful of cases prior to 2014. The disease is still relatively uncommon compared to other arboviral diseases and primarily affects travelers. Most pharmacists have never seen a clinical case of CHIKV infection. Since this is a new disease in the U.S., experts are still learning about CHIKV infection and trying to determine the most effective management strategies. New guidelines and studies discussing effective management and identification of symptoms of CHIKV infection have recently been released based on data from the La Réunion epidemic. It is important for pharmacists to be updated on the most recent recommendations for the identification, treatment, and prevention of CHIKV infection. Since this is a disease that is still new in the U.S., pharmacists may be unfamiliar with CHIKV, symptoms of infection, proper management, and prevention strategies. This module will provide an overview of CHIKV, transmission methods, symptoms, ways to confirm CHIKV infection, treatment, and prevention strategies.
