The use of herbal supplements as a substitute for or as a compliment to conventional medical treatment is a growing trend in the United States. While herbal supplements may be considered effective and safe to use by consumers, there are multiple factors that influence their efficacy and safety.
Healthcare professionals must be aware of the safety and efficacy issues related to the use of herbal products by those they serve. It is also important to know where to look for valid resources to identify clinical, valid information to share with consumers and further their own understanding of herbal supplements.

After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Describe the prevalence of and rationale for herbal supplement use by consumers.
  • Explain safety issues of herbal supplements pertaining to contamination, adulteration, toxicity, and herb/drug interactions.
  • Identify valid resources when checking the efficacy and safety of herbal supplements.

Just realized that many countries may use plant protection substances which can be bad. Not allowed in US for farmers, so why are such herbs allowed in US?
