The last few years, new guidelines have emerged regarding cholesterol, saturated fats and sugar, resulting in confusion of both consumers and health professionals. Identifying who is at risk for CVD is changing as we have a greater understanding of apolipoproteins and subfractions of low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Treatment recommendations changed in 2013, regarding measures of lipoprotein when taking cholesterol-lowering drugs, but other guidelines still use them. This course will update your knowledge and skills about the relationship of diet and exercise to the prevention and treatment of CVD so that you can improve the outcomes of your clients and patients.


Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
  • Explain the initiation, progression, and consequences of atherosclerosis
  • Identify and define the different types of cholesterol, and explain the role of low-density lipoprotein in CVD
  • Define exogenous and endogenous fat transport and reverse cholesterol transport
  • Define familial hypercholesterolemia, and discuss the relative importance of high serum cholesterol, heredity, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, sex, age, physical inactivity, and cigarette smoking as risk factors for atherosclerosis
  • Define saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and trans fatty acids, and explain their significance to the development of atherosclerosis
  • Explain the difference between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and discuss their effect on atherosclerosis
  • Discuss the relationship between intake of calories, sugar, and fat in the American diet
  • Identify the various kinds of dietary fiber, explain their effects on serum cholesterol, and cite food sources for each
  • Explain how insulin resistance affects CVD risk
  • Explain the effects of dietary protein, alcohol, and coffee on serum cholesterol and CVD risk
  • Discuss dietary aspects of hypertension and its significance for CVD risk
  • Discuss the major studies of diet and CVD risk, and explain the consensus recommendations for dietary change
  • Compare and contrast the dietary recommendations from the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association, the National Lipid Association, and the Eighth Joint National Committee
  • Name the major cholesterol-lowering drugs, and list criteria for drug therapy
  • Examine the role of exercise in promoting health, fitness, and weight loss
  • Design exercise programs for apparently healthy people
  • Explain the significance of high serum cholesterol in children, and explain how risk assessment, screening, and counseling can be integrated into a treatment and prevention plan
  • Design a diet that meets the guidelines of the AHA for CVD prevention

This course was very detailed and informative. I now have a better understanding of the effects of nutrition and dietary habits and recommendations on cardiovascular health. This is a great course for all healthcare professionals in supporting healthy behavioral changes in our members.
