Vertigo is more than a Hitchcock movie. It’s the major disabling symptom in an unpredictable condition — Meniere’s disease — that is diagnosed in 45,000 Americans yearly. Vertigo can be key to recognizing this chronic, incurable problem. What it is and what causes it are nearly as mysterious now as when it was first described 150 years ago. Diagnosis and treatment can be difficult, fraught with trial and error. Despite these challenges, an astute healthcare provider’s prompt recognition, appropriate treatment and education can make a difference in a patient’s hearing, balance and quality of life. This module describes Meniere’s disease, its symptoms and its treatments.
The purpose of this module is to provide nurses, physical therapists, fitness professionals, athletic trainers and health educators with the information to understand what’s known about Meniere’s disease and to provide care to patients with the disease. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Identify the four main symptoms of early Meniere’s disease
- Describe two inner ear functions
- Identify three sensory functions affected by Meniere’s disease
