This new multi-media module includes a PowerPoint slide presentation with audio to view on-screen, and PDF documents to download and read at your convenience. The slide portion takes about 40 minutes to complete and covers the background research on unintended consequences of simplistic dietary recommendations. The course includes recent research describing how consumers assimilate nutrition information and the possible unintended health consequences when overly-simplistic advice is followed. The slides include practical suggestions for individualizing dietary recommendations to meet clients' unique needs. There is also a bibliography for those seeking additional information on the topic, and resources to use in your practice. This module is a joint project of Nutrition Dimension/Gannett Education/Dairy Council of California, the latter of which is solely responsible for its content.
The goal of this course is to help health professionals recognize the pitfalls and unintended negative health consequences of using simplistic nutrition messages. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Explain how clients and consumers assimilate nutrition information
- Discuss the negative health consequences when simplistic nutrition recommendations are applied
- Utilize tools to help clients anticipate long-term consequences of nutrition advice
