During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes many physiological changes. These changes and their nutrition implications must be understood in order to provide the best nutritional care to pregnant women. A woman’s organ systems function differently during pregnancy. Metabolic changes in the mother and the nutrient needs of the growing fetus affect maternal nutrient needs. The placenta plays an important role in ensuring adequate nutrient transfer between mother and fetus. The supply of nutrients regulates growth factors which are necessary for fetal growth. In recent years, the essential omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA have been shown to be critical for brain and nervous-system function during fetal development. Ensuring an adequate supply becomes even more essential during pregnancy.


The goal of this pregnancy and nutrition continuing education course is to provide dietitians, health educators, and pharmacists with information on how nutrient needs are altered during pregnancy due to the physiological changes that occur. After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Define the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy.
  • Explain how these physiological changes alter nutrient needs during pregnancy.
  • Discuss how omega-3 fatty acids affect both the mother and developing fetus and identify good food sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
