Summary:

Achieving an appropriate weight gain and making safe dietary choices are of special importance throughout pregnancy to ensure a healthy baby.  This continuing education program answers questions regarding appropriate weight gain, preventing foodborne illness, whether various foods and food components are safe for the mother and baby, and the best vitamin supplements for pregnant women.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide dietitians and health educators with adequate information on appropriate weight gain and safety of various foods and supplements during pregnancy. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Outline guidelines for adequate or inadequate weight gain during pregnancy.
  • Explain at least six tactics that can be used to prevent foodborne illness during pregnancy.
  • Discuss the safety of various foods, components of foods, herbs, and supplements as related to pregnancy.
