Summary:

Aromatherapy refers to the use of concentrated oils from plants, called essential oils, for the purposes of health and well-being. Due to the high costs of healthcare and some of the side effects associated with medication, it may prove beneficial for healthcare providers and caregivers to have additional options for treatment. Further, the use of essential oils may be indicated for conditions where conventional treatments fall short, such as MRSA. Several studies have analyzed the chemical constituents of essential oils and evaluated their effectiveness in certain conditions or their effects on specific body tissue. This course provides an overview of several of these studies, their findings and their clinical relevance for caregivers, healthcare providers or self-care.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide an overview of the history and current use of aromatherapy as well as its use as an adjunct treatment in health care. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Outline a brief history of aromatherapy and its current use
  • Describe the importance of research in the field and its challenges
  • Discuss research on the benefits of some of the most used oils
  • Identify specific conditions that have been studied with aromatherapy treatments
