Summary:

Your patients are coming to you for help with obesity. They are desperate and do not know where to turn. Do you have the skills or the program to help them successfully lose weight and keep it off? While there is no consensus as to what constitutes “successful” weight loss, we do know that a weight loss of 5% to 10% improves health. To help provide patients with personalized plans of care and intervention strategies, healthcare professionals need to understand how to help people manage obesity, while taking their individual situations and needs into consideration. The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has begun reimbursing providers for intensive behavioral therapy for obesity, but many healthcare providers are unsure how to handle it.

Objectives:

The goal of this course is to educate healthcare providers about the causes and consequences of obesity and provide them with the tools necessary to implement a Medicare-compliant program for intensive behavioral therapy for obesity. After studying the information presented here, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the scope of the obesity epidemic, its causes, and consequences for the person and society
  • Identify the Medicare-required components of a program for intensive behavioral therapy for obesity
  • Assess medical, diet, lifestyle, and readiness-to-change information gathered from clients and use that information to develop an individualized treatment plan
