Weight loss does not have to be dramatic to be beneficial, just a 5% weight loss can have a profound impact on health. But do primary care providers know how to deliver obesity counseling? Do they know what works to achieve and maintain the 5% weight loss over time? In many cases the answer is no. This interprofessional course takes a step-by-step approach to setting up an Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Obesity CMS-approved program for those new to obesity counseling and for those with experience. It includes billing information, documentation requirements, forms for nutrition assessment, readiness to change, physical activity, and how to individualize a treatment program to achieve success. A 40+ page resource guide contains forms and educational handouts to ease the burden of developing a program from the ground up and how to work together as a team to improve outcomes.

The goal of this course is to educate healthcare providers about causes and consequences of obesity and provide them with the tools necessary to implement a Medicare-compliant program for Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Obesity. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Explain the scope of the obesity epidemic, its causes, and the health, social, economic and psychological consequences on the person and society
  • Describe various weight-loss options, including diets, exercise, medication, and surgery, and choose the best treatment for your client
  • Identify the Medicare-required components of a program for Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Obesity and how to get reimbursement
  • Assess medical, diet, lifestyle and readiness to change information gathered from clients and use that information to develop an individualized treatment plan
  • Develop individualized diet and exercise plans for clients, monitor the clients’ progress and make adjustments as needed
  • Define weight-loss success, explain the most common roadblocks to success and develop a strategy to overcome those roadblocks
  • Describe SMART goals, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and demonstrate how each can increase weight loss counseling success.
