Course Overview

This case-based module places you into medical scenarios in which you will make decisions about the appropriate handling of a patient situation. The purpose of this module is to review and reinforce training, keeping your skills sharp and patients safe. Throughout each scenario you will be asked questions about your decisions, but your answer choices will not be scored and you will not receive a report. You can move freely throughout the module and visit earlier sections without losing progress on previously answered questions. You can revisit this module in the future as many times as you would like.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) workgroup standard for fetal heart rate monitoring assessment and categorization, first proposed in 1997 and subsequently updated in 2008 was meant to promote commonality of FHR tracing nomenclature and interpretation. Based on these recommendations, a three-tiered categorization pattern based on the visual assessment of the fetal heart rate pattern was adopted.

Dr. Cusick earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio. He completed his residency at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Post-residency, he completed a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Cusick is board-certified in OB/GYN and Maternal-Fetal Medicine, is an ARDMS-accredited sonographer, and is certified in first-trimester screening through the Fetal Medicine Foundation. He is an assistant clinical professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and at the Quinnipiac University Frank Netter School of Medicine. Dr. Cusick holds membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine, and American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and serves on the board of The Fetal Medicine Foundation.
