Course Overview

For nearly all infants, breastfeeding is the best source of nutrition and immunologic protection. It offers other physical and psychological health benefits to infant and mother as well. Despite the overwhelming benefits of breastfeeding, depending on the source consulted, the rates of breastfeeding in the United States fall short of the recommended six months to two years. Some barriers to breastfeeding include negative attitude of mother or family toward breastfeeding, and lack of assistance and support. Despite the benefits of breastfeeding, it is sometimes contraindicated. Promoting exclusive breastfeeding is a public health priority, and there are many organizations that can educate health care professionals on optimal breastfeeding practices, encourage information exchange and research, and expand knowledge of human lactation.

About the Course Author

Karen Lilyquist, PhD, RD, RN, LD, has 21 years of nutrition practice experience. Since 2001, she has counseled clients concerned with weight control and food-related issues. She has developed and coordinated diet therapy and nutritional education programs specific to nutritional management of conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and weight loss/management. Since 2006, she has taught nutrition classes for the University of Phoenix and moderated teleconferences for the National Institute for Health Education and Training.
