Course Overview

Postprandial hypotension (PPH) is a clinical condition that receives little attention, yet it increases the chances of morbidity and mortality. PPH is a drop in blood pressure after eating and can lead to dizziness, syncope, and falls. This condition is not common in younger adults, but it is prevalent among older adults with high blood pressure (BP) or neurological disorders that impair the brain’s control centers for autonomic nervous system processes. The incidence of PPH increases with age and is often underdiagnosed. It is imperative that healthcare practitioners know how to recognize PPH and understand the connection between food and beverage intake and PPH pathophysiology so the condition can be properly managed. The goal of this continuing education program is to increase the healthcare practitioner’s knowledge of the causes, prevention, and management of PPH in older adults.
