Course Overview

Major depressive disorder is characterized by recurrent depressive episodes that are not induced by chemical substances and are unrelated to another medical condition. Bipolar and related disorders are characterized by alternating manic and depressive symptoms. Given the nature of mood disorders and the prevalence of additional disorders (comorbidities), management should begin with a full assessment by a licensed mental health professional with expertise in adolescent psychiatric disorders to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Treatment for mood disorders may include a combination of individual, group, and family psychotherapy, as well as pharmacological intervention. This program will help mental health professionals identify symptoms of depressive and bipolar disorders according to the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).
