Course Overview

As a clinician working with children and adolescents, the likelihood is very high that you have already encountered the following scenarios: A child or adolescent who has been misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder but actually has a different disorder; A child or adolescent who actually has bipolar disorder, yet the symptoms have been missed and they are being treated for something else.

Both of these circumstances are detrimental to the well-being of the youth you serve. Appropriate treatment hinges on recognition of the correct diagnosis. Untreated or delayed treatment for bipolar disorders can have dire consequences, including severely impaired functioning, the development of other psychiatric disorders, and suicide.

In this course, you will learn how to identify the symptoms of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents. You will learn how to differentiate bipolar disorders from other conditions with overlapping symptoms. You will learn about current guidelines for pharmacological treatment of these conditions and the effective ingredients emphasized in psychosocial interventions for these disorders. The goal of this educational program is to provide social workers, marriage and family therapists, professional counselors, psychologists, and nurses in health and human services settings with skills to identify and effectively treat pediatric bipolar disorders.
