Course Overview

LGBTQ+ children and youth are like other children and youth, but they face unique challenges and discrimination. Families, caregivers, providers, and educators can all play a role in fostering positive development, healthy coping skills, resilience, and thriving in LGBTQ+ children and youth. Families’ culture, historical traditions, and belief systems can be assets in resilience building. This course will provide an overview of basic information on gender and sexual identities in LGBTQ+ children and youth. This course will also provide a discussion of institutional, cultural, and social discrimination, intersectional identities and complex trauma, assessment practices, and methods for building resilience in LGBTQ+ children, youth, and their families.

About the Course Author

Nellie Galindo received her Masters of Social Work and Masters of Science in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has worked with individuals with disabilities in several different settings, including working as a direct service provider for individuals with mental illness and leading a youth program for young adults with disabilities. She has facilitated and created trainings for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the areas of self-advocacy, healthy relationships, sexual health education, and violence and abuse prevention. Mrs. Galindo has worked in state government assisting individuals with disabilities obtain accessible health information in their communities, as well as utilizing the Americans with Disabilities Act to ensure equal access to healthcare services. Tavi Hawn, LCSW trained in both macro and micro social work at the University of Washington in Seattle. After working on the West Coast with houseless youth, children who'd experienced severe abuse or neglect, and adults in residential substance abuse treatment, they returned home to North Carolina and worked with youth in the juvenile justice system. They then started a private therapy practice, primarily seeing transgender and gender non-conforming people of all ages. They co-founded a nonprofit summer camp for queer and trans youth and youth from LGBTQ+ families, and also formed an LGBTQ+ Wellness Center Collaborative providing a variety of healing modalities and community events. Tavi is a queer, two spirit, multi-racial, native person who currently provides consultation and training for organizations and individuals seeking to become more trans-affirming, in addition to facilitating a two spirit wellness circle through a local urban Indian center, and maintaining a small private therapy practice in Maryland. They continue to seek ways to use their privileges to increase access for trans, two spirit, gender non-conforming people in the fields of social work and mental health as practitioners, instructors, and recipients of services.
