Course Overview

The use of benzodiazepines as sedatives and hypnotic agents dates back decades. Benzodiazepines have become one of the most popular and widely prescribed medication classes due to their versatility in managing various diseases. Benzodiazepines are approved for use in patients diagnosed with insomnia, anxiety, seizures, alcohol withdrawal, and muscle spasms. They may be used in combination with other medications for light sedation and anesthesia. This class of medications is also used off-label for drug-induced movement disorders, agitation, intractable hiccups, nausea, and vomiting. When used for a limited amount of time with appropriate dosing, benzodiazepines are considered safe and effective medications. However, they also have become one of the most highly misused and abused prescribed medications. Benzodiazepines are commonly associated with substance abuse and overdose, especially when used in combination with other sedatives and opioids.
