Bundle Overview
Benzodiazepines are one of the oldest sedatives and hypnotic drugs available. These medications were first introduced into the market in the early 1960s; since then, they have become one of the most widely prescribed medications. Benzodiazepines have a wide variety of uses, ranging from treatment of anxiety, insomnia and alcohol withdrawal to use as muscle relaxants and in anesthesia. They can also be combined with other medications for light sedation. When used at the right doses and for short periods, the benzodiazepines are relatively safe and very effective. However, over the past three decades, benzodiazepines have also become one of the drugs that is most abused by people of all ages. In addition, these drugs are frequently associated with overdose, either when used alone or in combination with other agents.
