Course Overview

Elastography is the measurement of the elastic properties of soft tissues. Elastography enhances many traditional imaging modalities, including ultrasound and MRI. Elastography images are obtained while the region of interest is compressed or placed under stress, and differences in tissues are discerned. Ultrasound-based elastography is a noninvasive imaging technique that is useful in many clinical settings and is a rapid, painless, reproducible method of assessing several pathologies. Ultrasound-based elastography offers few safety concerns and enhances the versatility of traditional ultrasound. The clinical uses of elastography in assessments of the liver, musculoskeletal system, and several cancers are growing, and research into its applications continues to be validated and expanded. Eventually, elastography may replace invasive diagnostic methods, such as biopsy, in certain disease states and conditions.
