Summary:

Diets fail, and many people trying to diet end up feeling like failures. With more than one-third of Americans considered obese and one-third overweight, there have to be other options for weight loss. Physical activity, diet modifications (such as reducing energy intake), and positive behavior changes are recognized methods for weight control, but don’t seem to make a dent in the obesity epidemic. To reduce the crippling effects of the obesity epidemic on individuals and the nation as a whole, pharmacotherapy may be used as a supplement to nutrition and physical activity counseling and lifestyle management. There are now five FDA-approved medications for chronic weight management, and several others are approved for short-term use. Weight-loss medications continue to be controversial, making a risk-benefit analysis key before implementing this type of weight-loss intervention.

Objectives:

The goal of this weight-loss medication continuing education course is to educate healthcare professionals about the risks, benefits, and appropriateness of the weight-loss medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • List FDA-approved weight-loss medications and explain the pharmacological effects each has in the body
  • Discuss the pros and cons of the use of prescription drugs in the treatment of obesity
  • Identify appropriate candidates for weight-loss drugs as part of a interprofessional team
