Summary:

Fat loading is a dietary strategy shown to enhance further the body’s ability to use fat as fuel while sparing muscle glycogen. Does rocky road ice cream for breakfast and a bucket of fried chicken for lunch sound too good to be true? Fat loading, both short-term and long-term, are recent nutritional strategies for improving athletic performance. High-fat diets are purported to enhance endurance by promoting fat oxidation and carbohydrate sparing. This course explains the rationale behind fat loading and athletic performance, provides a detailed discussion of fat metabolism during exercise, discusses the effects of endurance training on fat metabolism and examines whether fat loading is harmful.

Objectives:

The goal of this fat-loading nutrition course is to provide the physiological rationale for fat loading and the current research evidence on the effects of such a diet on sports performance. After completing this course, the student will be able to:
  • Explain two ways in which endurance training increases fat metabolism
  • Explain the potential health and performance hazards of fat loading
  • Explain the concept of “glycogen impairment”
