Course Overview

Schizophrenia is the most common psychotic illness in the U.S., affecting 1% of the population. Not only do these patients have a life expectancy that is 20-30 years shorter than the general population, but they also suffer from a drastically reduced quality of life. The management of schizophrenia is a large economic burden on the U.S. healthcare system. Studies have demonstrated that relapsed patients have healthcare costs that are three times higher than those of patients whose disease is stable. Schizophrenia is treated with antipsychotic medications, but noncompliance can result in ineffective therapy. Many schizophrenic patients have difficulty remembering to take their medications or have negative connotations associated with them. Additionally, antipsychotic medications are frequently discontinued due to adverse events. Without proper treatment, many of these patients relapse and require frequent hospitalizations.
