Alzheimer‘s disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks the brain‘s nerve cells (neurons), resulting in loss of memory, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes. An estimated 5.5 million Americans of all ages had Alzheimer's disease in 2016. For Americans ages 65 and older, this prevalence represents one in 10 people; an estimated 5.3 million people who are age 65 and older. This interprofessional continuing education module informs nurses, physicians, dietitians, speech-language pathologists, physical and occupational therapists, emergency medical technicians and paramedics, and social workers about the trends in diagnosis and management of Alzheimer‘s disease.
