Course Overview

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) encompasses a broad spectrum of practices and beliefs, including the use of functional lab tests, special diets, and nutritional supplements, including herbs. Public perception that these are natural and harmless choices can lead to adverse reactions with medications or medical procedures, particularly when most consumers do not report use to providers. Other challenges include varying credentialing standards, non-stringent quality assurance standards, and lacking or preliminary clinical studies. Public demand for information about nutritional supplements, the growing body of evidence supporting use of supplements in disease prevention and treatment, and increasing popularity of supplements, makes it imperative for nutrition and fitness practitioners to learn more about the safety, efficacy, and appropriate use of these products.

About the Course Author

Julie Stefanski, MEd, RDN, CSSD, LDN, CDCES, FAND is a SME Writer focused on topics related to food, nutrition & dietetics for Relias. She is a registered dietitian nutritionist and has been a certified diabetes educator since 2003. Ms. Stefanski earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics and a master's degree in Adult Education with a special focus on distance learning. She was an adjunct instructor in the Stabler Department of Nursing at York College of Pennsylvania for 13 years. Stefanski is the owner of Stefanski Nutrition Services where she specializes in pediatric nutrition, diabetes, gastrointestinal issues and sports nutrition. Stefanski serves as national media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.

Leslie K. Kay-Getzinger, MS, RD specialized in holistic nutrition following her conventional training and education in 1982. As production manager for a nutraceutical manufacturer, she traveled to China to observe the manufacturing of traditional botanical medicines. She has worked with conventionally trained and integrative medical practitioners, served on an Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) task force developing Complementary and Alternative Medicine competencies for dietetic practitioners, and held positions in the Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine (DIFM) Dietetic Practice Group. She completed postgraduate training and certification in integrative and functional medicine and botanical medicine, and has worked as adjunct faculty at community, state and private colleges throughout Southern California. Leslie currently works as adjunct faculty at CSU. Education: Southern Illinois Univ. (BS, Food and Nutrition; MS, Human Development.). Leslie K.
