Course Overview

The well-established literacy challenges faced by children with significant hearing loss include but are not limited to insufficient vocabulary, delayed language, limited access to the phonologic code of the language, limited understanding of the relationship between sound and print and, overall, less than satisfactory reading outcomes. With the use of cochlear implants, children with significant hearing loss are now able to access much of the information they may have previously missed. Thanks to improved auditory availability and attention to best practices, the field is beginning to see improved literacy outcomes for children with cochlear implants. This learning activity discusses how to improve literacy in school-aged children with cochlear implants.

About the Course Author

Julie A. Hanks, EdD, CCC-SLP, is an associate professor in the audiology and speech-language sciences program at the University of Northern Colorado. Her teaching and research interests are in speech production by children who are deaf or hard of hearing, self-efficacy, and clinical education. She is co-author of Speech Assessment System: For Students Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Julie A.
