Course Overview

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders diagnosed in childhood, and its symptoms can continue through adolescence and adulthood. Diagnosing and treating individuals with ADHD can be challenging because it is common for many children to exhibit inattentiveness, hyperactivity, or impulsivity at times. The information in this course will give you the tools you need to make an accurate diagnosis and choose the most effective treatment for the individuals you serve. In this course, you will learn about the 3 different presentations of ADHD along with key behaviors of each. In addition to specific diagnostic criteria of ADHD, you will learn how to identify typical symptoms, particularly how symptoms manifest differently in individuals of different ages. This course also discusses some of the possible causes of ADHD as well as current treatment options for children, teenagers, and young adults, including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. A series of experiential lessons and interactive exercises will help you practice and apply what you have learned. This course is appropriate for healthcare professionals with basic to intermediate levels of experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults in a variety of healthcare settings. DSM™ and DSM-5™ are registered trademarks of the American Psychiatric Association. The American Psychiatric Association is not affiliated with nor endorses this course.
