Needlestick injuries continue to pose a threat to all healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in patient care. Despite the preventative processes health care institutions have put into place to prevent needlestick injuries, HCPs still face this threat every day. There is a plethora of information and recommendations now available on the appropriate treatment for occupational exposures and the management of needlestick injuries. This module will review the current literature on managing the most common bloodborne pathogens transmitted from needlestick injuries and evaluating post-exposure prophylaxis.

The purpose of this needlestick continuing education program is to provide healthcare professionals with guidelines for treating needlestick injuries. After studying the material presented here, the provider will be able to:
  • Identify factors that can lead to a needlestick injury.
  • Recognize the risk of disease transmission from needlestick injuries.
  • Identify procedures to follow after a needlestick injury.
  • Discuss the workup of a provider with a needlestick injury and responsibilities of various members of the interprofessional team.
Level of Instruction: Basic
