Summary:

Creating a clean and therapeutic environment requires the healthcare team to understand the perspective of the patient and family and to take action to support healing. The environment of care was addressed even by Florence Nightingale and is even more significant today. Noise prevention and control are two fundamentals of safe and healing care and understanding how to provide a therapeutic environment increases awareness and offers opportunities for an enhanced patient experience. Improved patient outcomes are also associated with improvements in the environment of care.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide healthcare professionals with information on creating a clean, therapeutic, and healing environment for patients in the acute care setting. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify patient and family areas impacting perceptions and ratings on the hospital consumer assessment of healthcare providers and systems (HCAHPS) survey questions related to a clean environment
  • Identify successful strategies to create a therapeutic environment of care through a clean environment
  • Discuss successful strategies to create a therapeutic environment of care through minimizing noise at night
