Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) was not a nationally identifiable disease in 2014 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The year 2014 marked the turning point for this disease in the U.S. and identified the first cases of local transmission of CHIKV. A total of 2,811 imported cases of CHIKV were reported in 2014 and 12 cases were locally transmitted in Florida. The disease was recognized as a nationally identifiable condition in the U.S. in 2015. There is currently no vaccine or antiviral treatment for CHIKV infection. Therefore, these patients require effective analgesics to relieve pain and prevent loss of function. Many patients with severe symptoms suffer a reduced quality of life. The most effective method to prevent CHIKV infection is to protect against mosquito bites. Pharmacists can help prevent outbreaks of this disease by educating patients who are traveling or who live in areas where the virus may be transmitted about prevention methods.

The goal of this module is to provide pharmacists with a comprehensive overview of Chikungunya virus and to present the latest information about its symptoms and management. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Review the epidemiology of Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and its methods of transmission
  • Identify symptoms of CHIKV infection
  • Describe differentiating factors between CHIKV and dengue virus infection
  • Review management options for symptoms of CHIKV infection
  • List prevention methods to limit CHIKV transmission
