Diphtheria was once responsible for large epidemics all over the globe. The infection is caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which is a gram-positive, nonmotile aerobic organism. It occurs when there is overcrowding, poor living conditions, incomplete immunization, and poor overall health. However, since the appearance of diphtheria toxoid nearly a century ago, infection has declined. In 2014, the World Health Organization reported approximately 7,000 global cases compared with nearly 60,000 just 10 years previously. Treatment of toxigenic diphtheria demands urgency and management should be initiated based on suspicion. Delay in treatment usually leads to high morbidity and mortality.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacists, paramedics and EMTs, and laboratory professionals with adequate information about diphtheria, its epidemiology, presentation, and management of infection. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the transmission of diphtheria and its epidemiology
  • Discuss the presentation of diphtheria and organ involvement
  • Explain the management of diphtheria, the drugs available to treat the disease, and the role of antitoxin in its treatment
  • Describe the vaccination protocol for diphtheria for children, adults, and elderly patients
