Competency in laboratory mycology, a specialty area of clinical microbiology, depends on the knowledge, experience, and awareness of the mycologist. In addition to proper collection of specimens, thorough knowledge of processing techniques, tests, stains, and reagents used in the identification of pathogenic fungi is critical for rapid isolation, accurate identification, appropriate treatment, and avoidance of potentially fatal consequences for the patient. At the same time, the technologist must be able to distinguish between true pathogenic fungal infections and common laboratory contaminants to avoid miscommunication, unnecessary treatments, and unnecessary costs.

The goal of this continuing education program is to help the mycologist distinguish pathogenic and nonpathogenic, or opportunistic, Candida yeasts from pathogenic and nonpathogenic Cryptococcus and similar yeasts. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Distinguish between pathogenic yeasts and nonpathogenic yeasts
  • Visually identify yeast cultures of each type
  • Describe proper laboratory procedures and techniques used for examination and identification
Level of Instruction: Basic
