Macroscopic urine analysis consists of examination of the physiochemical characteristics of urine, including volume, color, clarity, odor, pH, and specific gravity. Urine reagent test strip results (manual or automated) detect the presence/absence and amount of the following constituents: protein, glucose, ketones, hemoglobin and myoglobin, nitrites, leukocytes, and urobilinogen.

The goal of this continuing education program is to educate laboratory professionals about macro urinalysis. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the components of the macroscopic examination of urine, including physical, chemical, and reagent test strip results (both manual and automated)
  • Discuss the requirements, devices, and procedures for the collection, handling, and transport of specimens for macroscopic urinalysis
  • Explain quality control requirements for conducting macroscopic urinalysis
Level of Instruction: Basic
