Summary:

The ABO blood group antigens are expressed on the surface of red blood cells and other cell types. These antigens can cause lethal transfusion reactions in patients receiving incompatible blood products. Accurate blood type determination by forward and reverse grouping as well as cross matching must be performed carefully to ensure compatibility for ABO and D antigens. Prenatal screening should be done to prevent hemolytic disease of the newborn in Rh-negative mothers having Rh-incompatible fetuses.

Objectives:

The goal of this ABO blood group continuing education module is to provide laboratory personnel with the ability to recognize and define the ABO blood groups, to describe the testing involved in their identification, and to demonstrate the procedures involved in forward and reverse testing. After studying the information here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the basic biochemical structure of ABO and D blood group antigens, and the basic process of how enzymes control the synthesis of the ABO antigens
  • Describe how the antigenic expression of ABO and D blood groups is controlled by genes
  • Relate ABO genotypes to their corresponding phenotypes
  • Discuss how rare and acquired phenotypes arise, and how they are handled
  • Know the characteristics of antibodies to ABO and D blood group antigens and their clinical significance
  • Discuss how hemolytic disease of the newborn develops and how it can be prevented
  • Demonstrate the procedures for forward and reverse typing

Good short course on ABO and Rh blood groups. The terminology would be difficult for those without a biology back ground.
