Urinalysis provides important information about a patient’s renal and urinary tract status, as well as many other systemic disorders. The preliminary macroscopic urinalysis is often automated, using a chemically reactive dipstick or other device. It indicates whether a microscopic exam is necessary, according to each laboratory’s criteria. Some labs may routinely include the microscopic urinalysis as part of the test. Microscopic analysis reveals structures, cells, and artifacts that give valuable information about many disease states. While the macroscopic, or preliminary, testing detects the presence of chemicals and some structures present in the sample, microscopic analysis of the centrifuged sediment reveals all the insoluble and formed structures that have accumulated from the kidneys and the urinary tract. Identification of the structures present can help the healthcare professional with overall patient treatment.

The goal of this urinalysis continuing education course is to provide the laboratory professional with a comprehensive review of microscopic urinalysis. After studying the information here, you will be able to:
  • Outline the methods necessary for preparing urine samples for microscopic examination
  • Name the structures and cells present during a microscopic examination of urine sediment
  • Identify the disease states associated with microscopic urine findings and those structures found in healthy samples
Level of Instruction: Intermediate
