More than 30-million blood components are transfused annually in the U.S. But if blood types are mismatched, transfusions can be deadly. Three factors that commonly lead to ABO incompatibility errors have been identified as mislabeling of the blood specimen for crossmatching, misinterpretation by the blood bank and misidentification of the patient before blood transfusion. Nurses who generally administer blood products must follow facility policy to ensure that they give the correct blood product to the correct patient. With the increase in paramedics functioning in acute care and remote settings, it is essential paramedics have the training to administer blood products safely. It is also important for paramedics who aren’t trained to administer blood products to understand and be able to treat adverse reactions in patients they may be called upon to transport.

The goal of this blood transfusion error continuing education program is to educate nurses and laboratory professionals about blood incompatibility errors and the evidence-based practices to prevent them. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • List three factors that contribute to blood incompatibility errors
  • Describe blood type compatibility between the donor and recipient
  • Explain the procedure for safely administering blood transfusions

Good information and great patient bedside manner refresher. Not being on a patients bedside sometimes lets us forget what goes on, reading this helped me visualize myself in the nurse's shoes and what she must act on.
