Healthcare providers must communicate effectively with limited English-proficient patients to ensure patient safety and quality of care. They must be able to comply with government regulations, meet accreditation standards and provide evidence-based care. Providers also need to know how to use interpreters and evaluate who is an appropriate interpreter to provide linguistically appropriate care.
The goal of this continuing education program is to improve the ability of nurses, dietitians, dietary managers, health educators, laboratory professionals, occupational therapists, radiologic technologists, respiratory therapists, and social workers to provide quality care and better outcomes for patients who have limited English proficiency. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Discuss the importance of linguistically appropriate services for LEP patients
- Identify regulatory, accreditation and evidence-based standards related to LEP patients and linguistic services
