Summary:

The number of people diagnosed with diabetes mellitus continues to grow. It takes a team of healthcare practitioners, including a diabetes specialist (physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant), a diabetes nurse educator, a dietitian, and ideally, a mental health counselor and an exercise physiologist, to best coordinate and teach people about the management of type 1 diabetes. However, most people with type 1 diabetes don’t have access to this “dream team.” Nonspecialists often must provide the bulk of diabetes mellitus care to this patient population, and they may not have up-to-date knowledge and experience about therapy and resources.

Objectives:

The goal of this diabetes mellitus continuing education module is to update nurses’, dietitians’, health educators’ and laboratory professionals’ ability to recognize, prevent and treat hypoglycemia in tightly controlled type 1 diabetes. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the physiological response to hypoglycemia
  • Identify causes of hypoglycemia in relation to diabetes self-management
  • Describe clinical interventions for the prevention and treatment of hypoglycemia
