Summary:

Psittacosis is a rare infection caused by Chlamydophila psittaci, also known as Chlamydia psittaci. Psittacosis is classified as an occupational disease because it is most common in zookeepers, pet shop employees, poultry farmers and ranchers. The infection is very rarely transmitted from human to human. C. psittaci is present in the nasal secretions and feces of infected birds. The organism is then acquired via inhalation of aerosolized droplets of avian excreta or respiratory secretions of sick birds that are contaminated with C. psittaci. Once a diagnosis of psittacosis is made, treatment is required.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide laboratory professionals with material about psittacosis, its epidemiology, presentation and management. By studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe Chlamydophila psittaci, its epidemiology and clinical presentation
  • List populations at risk for psittacosis and regulations for importing birds
  • Discuss the laboratory diagnosis and the medications available to treat psittacosis
