Trephination is one of the oldest known surgical procedures. Meaning drilling of bone, it was once widely used as a treatment for many medical disorders. Today, the term trephination has been replaced by the term bone marrow aspiration. This procedure is an invaluable diagnostic tool for the evaluation of many hematological disorders. It is also used for diagnosis, staging, and therapeutic monitoring of lymphoproliferative disorders, such as Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, hairy cell leukemia, multiple myeloma, and other myeloproliferative/myelodysplastic disorders. Bone marrow aspiration may also be used to harvest bone marrow from a donor for use in bone marrow transplantation.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide surgical technologists and laboratory professionals accurate information on how a bone marrow aspiration and/or biopsy is performed and how the samples are prepared. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • List the surgical indications and contraindications for a bone marrow aspiration and/or biopsy
  • Discuss the anatomy of bone marrow
  • Describe the technique of bone marrow aspiration and/or biopsy
  • Explain the potential surgical complications of bone marrow aspiration and/or biopsy
  • List the equipment used for performing bone marrow aspiration and/or biopsy
Level of Instruction: Advanced
