Celiac disease was once thought to be a disease of childhood, but is now found in people of all ages. The prevalence of celiac disease is increasing. Untreated celiac disease has serious consequences for the patient, both intestinal and extra-intestinal. Prompt and accurate diagnosis of celiac disease is necessary for the well-being of the patient. Small bowel biopsy is considered the gold standard in diagnosing celiac disease. Serology and genetic testing are available now to aid in diagnosing celiac disease. New biochemical markers have improved traditional serology testing for celiac disease.
The objective of this module is to educate the healthcare professional about celiac disease and its diagnosis. After completing this module, you will be able to:
- List the characteristics of celiac disease and its presentation
- Describe the mechanism by which gluten affects the patient who has celiac disease
- Discuss the laboratory methods used to screen and confirm celiac disease
