Laboratory professionals play an important role in the outcome of medical treatment of patients. Healthcare providers expect and depend on accurate laboratory results to make a diagnosis and initiate proper treatment. The results that laboratories provide must not only be accurate, but also need to be provided in a short amount of time and communicated clearly. The process should be free from error. But when errors occur, careful analysis of the situation and review of the safety guidelines are necessary to prevent future errors. Errors in both inpatient and outpatient laboratory settings can have outcomes that range from morbidity to increased cost of care.

The goal of this course is to provide laboratory professionals with information and exercises about patient safety and the prevention of medical errors. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify possible sources of error within the total testing process
  • Discuss the types of pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical errors that occur in a medical laboratory
  • Describe the laboratory professional’s role in furthering the efforts to reduce medical errors
  • List the organizations involved in establishing patient safety goals and how they can be used in the laboratory setting
  • Summarize the goals of root cause analysis and its value in the laboratory setting
