Summary:

The use of benzodiazepines as sedatives and hypnotic agents dates back decades. Benzodiazepines have become one of the most popular and widely prescribed medication classes due to their versatility in managing various diseases. Benzodiazepines are approved for use in patients diagnosed with insomnia, anxiety, seizures, alcohol withdrawal, and muscle spasms. They may be used in combination with other medications for light sedation and anesthesia. This class of medications is also used off-label for drug-induced movement disorders, agitation, intractable hiccups, nausea, and vomiting. When used for a limited amount of time with appropriate dosing, benzodiazepines are considered safe and effective medications. However, they also have become one of the most highly misused and abused prescribed medications. Benzodiazepines are commonly associated with substance abuse and overdose, especially when used in combination with other sedatives and opioids.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacists with a complete and thorough overview of the uses of benzodiazepines and risks associated with misuse and overdose. This updated CE module provides important information needed to identify, treat, and prevent benzodiazepine overdose. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Summarize the pharmacologic mechanism of action and therapeutic uses of benzodiazepines
  • Develop treatment and management plans for benzodiazepine overdose
  • Identify prevention methods to decrease the risk of overdose from benzodiazepines

Very well written. A good review for EMS. Opioid overdose is the most common drug related emergency taught but with the increase in benzodiazepine abuse among teens, I highly recommend this.
