Summary:

Biological warfare remains a concern in the United States, which suffered anthrax attacks in 2001. This module gives an overview of anthrax and plague, including their history, natural causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to familiarize healthcare providers with bioterrorism and its implications for care. Part 1 focuses on the history of bioterrorism, the healthcare provider’s role in recognizing the signs and management of anthrax and plague infection, and measures the government has instituted in preparation for possible bioterrorism attacks. Part 2 focuses on the healthcare provider’s role in emergency preparedness and response and on keys to recognizing and responding to botulism and smallpox. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the history of bioterrorism
  • Describe the signs, symptoms, and management of anthrax and plague infection
  • Discuss measures the government has instituted in case of bioterrorism attacks

A scary subject to study but in the world today a very necessary class. Knowing the signs and symptoms for each classification will be very helpful in future contact with the public and patients. Great class!!
