Summary:

Just going to work each day as a healthcare professional places you at risk for acquiring a bloodborne pathogen. It is necessary to understand how to decrease your risk of exposure and follow protocols to manage an occupational exposure should it happen. This educational activity will update your knowledge on practices to prevent, control, and manage exposure to HIV and hepatitis.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide nurses, EMS professionals, laboratory professionals, and respiratory therapists with state-of-the-art practices to prevent, control, and manage exposures to HIV/AIDS and other bloodborne pathogens. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify three bloodborne pathogens that healthcare professionals could acquire through occupational exposure
  • Name three factors associated with occupational HIV transmission
  • Describe the optimal management of occupational HIV exposures, including timing of treatment and HIV testing
