Summary:

Biological warfare remains a concern in the U.S., which suffered anthrax attacks in 2001. This module gives an overview of anthrax and plague, including their history, natural causes, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to familiarize healthcare providers with bioterrorism and its implications for care. Part 1 focuses on the history of bioterrorism, the healthcare provider’s role in recognizing symptoms produced by common bioterrorism agents, and information about anthrax and plague. Part 2 focuses on the healthcare provider’s role in emergency preparedness and response and on keys to recognizing and responding to botulism and smallpox. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the history of bioterrorism
  • Recognize the symptoms of most likely biological agents
  • Describe the signs, symptoms, and management of anthrax and plague
