Vaginal bleeding is the most common cause of presentation to EMS during the first trimester of pregnancy. It accounts for 1.6 % of all ED visits annually. Women who present with this symptom are more likely to be young, black, Hispanic or uninsured. The number of women who present with this complaint and miscarry has been reported to be between 11% and 50%. About 80% of these miscarriages will occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. This program will inform paramedics about the major causes, critical signs and appropriate triage of bleeding in early pregnancy.

The purpose of this bleeding in early pregnancy continuing education program is to inform paramedics about the major causes, critical signs, and appropriate treatment and triage of bleeding in early pregnancy. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the four major causes of bleeding in early pregnancy
  • Describe key questions to ask during triage
  • List the critical signs that suggest ectopic pregnancy or inevitable miscarriage
