Worldwide, suicide is the 13th-leading cause of death, with the highest rates found in countries with advanced healthcare. Washington state ranks 22nd among states, with a suicide rate of 15.8 people per 100,000 population. CDC statistics indicate that all age groups are affected. There has been a startling rise in suicide among middle-age Americans. Suicide rates for middle-age women have increased 63% since 1999; for men, the increase is 43% in the same time frame. The percentage increase is the highest for any age group, and the CDC has identified the suicide rate among middle-age Americans as a public health concern. Also of great concern is the suicide rate among U.S. military veterans. This course provides PTs, OTs, and pharmacists with information about the issue of suicide and its prevention strategies, and it will help them meet the Washington state requirement on suicide prevention.

The goal of this suicide prevention continuing education program is to provide physical therapists, occupational therapists, and pharmacists with information about the issue of suicide and prevention strategies and to help them meet the Washington state requirement on suicide prevention. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the scope and risks of the suicide problem in the U.S.
  • Conduct a comprehensive and effective suicide assessment
  • Identify the process for referrals and resources
