Because of the potential for abuse and diversion associated with controlled prescription medications, such as opioids, tranquilizers, and amphetamines, the U.S. DEA, along with state narcotic control bureaus, monitor them closely. In addition, practitioners and pharmacies are required to monitor and report the use of these controlled substances and make ethical dispensing decisions based on each patient’s condition and need for the drug. Due to the many regulations regarding the use of controlled substances, pharmacy technicians should become familiar with the warning signs of drug abuse, the signs of fraudulent prescriptions, the etiology of substance use disorders, and the laws to prevent drug diversion. Pharmacy technicians will then be better able to assess each patient individually, avoid unnecessary judgment or bias regarding these disorders, and treat each patient with compassion and respect.

The goal of this program is to educate and inform pharmacy technicians about their role in the recognition and prevention of drug abuse and diversion in the pharmacy setting. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Review definitions for prescription substance abuse disorders
  • Review the Controlled Substance Act and the drug schedules
  • Discuss when and how to report drug diversion to the Drug Enforcement Administration
  • Review current and future techniques and the technology used in detecting diversion in community and the institutional setting
  • Identify some of the most commonly abused prescription drugs
  • Recognize some signs of drug abuse and withdrawal
  • Describe ways to treat patients involved with drug abuse with professionalism and empathy
