In December of 2014, 14 employees, including pharmacists and co-founders, of the New England Compounding Center were arrested and charged with second-degree murder due to a deadly outbreak of meningitis caused by contaminated compounds. This devastating event resulted in dozens of deaths and illness in hundreds of others. Pharmacy law in the state of Massachusetts has since adapted a requirement specific to compounding for pharmacists and technicians but the repercussions of this event resonate deeply with providers and patients alike everywhere. This module is designed to demonstrate basic pharmacy compounding techniques.

The goal of this continuing education program is to demonstrate clearly various pharmacy compounding techniques for common sterile and nonsterile products, and review supplemental information related to compounding these formulations accurately using aseptic techniques. After studying the information presented here, you should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of these nonsterile principles:
    • Trituration
    • Geometric dilution
    • Correctly creating an aliquot and solving for various missing values
  • Review techniques for these non-sterile preparations:
    • Manual capsule punching
    • Manually adding a powder to an ointment base
  • Review key concepts related to aseptic technique, especially with regard to working within a hood
    • Handwashing
    • Appropriate gowning for pharmaceutical compounding
  • Review techniques for these sterile preparations:
    • Reconstituting lyophilized medication in vials
    • Adding solutions to IV bags
    • Using ampules in compounds
