Pharmacogenomics combines the study of pharmacology (the science of drugs) and the study of genomics (the science of genes and their functions). It is a growing field that emphasizes the important contribution of genetics to the variability of drug response. Pharmacogenomics-related biomarkers, which may describe variants in germ-line or somatic cells, functional deficiencies, variations in expression, or chromosomal abnormalities, can be used for drug selection and dosage adjustment. Important obstacles impede the implementation of personalized medicine and the widespread application of pharmacogenomics principles, including cost, time for testing, demonstration of clinical benefit, and training and education of healthcare professionals. Pharmacists must be able to educate other healthcare providers and patients about the implications of genetic tests and direct choices of individualized therapies.
The goal of this program is to educate and inform pharmacists about the importance of genetics in drug therapy and the future of pharmacogenomics in patient care. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe basic pharmacogenomic concepts
- Recognize some common genetic variants and their impacts on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
- Identify resources for obtaining current and updated pharmacogenomics information
- List drugs and disease states for which pharmacogenomics affect drug efficacy and/or safety
- Outline barriers to implementing personalized medicine
